What it involves
A rewire involves replacing the cables that run through the fabric of your home — from the consumer unit out to every socket, switch, light and appliance circuit. Full rewires replace all the fixed wiring. Partial rewires address specific areas: a new extension, an additional floor, or circuits that have failed inspection. All work is carried out to 18th Edition wiring regulations and certified under Part P.
Why it matters
Wiring from the 1960s, 70s or 80s was built to a different standard. PVC insulation degrades over time, and old rubber or fabric-insulated cables present a genuine fire and shock risk. If your sockets are square, your lighting circuits still run on old round-pin fittings, or an EICR has flagged Code 1 or Code 2 issues, a rewire is likely the right solution. It also gives you the opportunity to reposition sockets, add circuits for EV charging or solar, and future-proof the whole installation.
