Electrical Fault Finding

No guessing. Systematic diagnosis. Fixed properly.

What it involves

Electrical faults range from a tripping RCD and dead sockets through to intermittent problems that only appear under load, or more serious issues detected during an inspection. We use systematic testing methods — insulation resistance testing, continuity checks, loop impedance measurement and thermal imaging where appropriate — to locate the root cause rather than just resetting the breaker and hoping.

Why it matters

Ignoring a tripping circuit or a flickering light is a common mistake. What seems like a minor nuisance can indicate a deteriorating cable, a loose connection working its way loose under thermal cycling, or water ingress. An electrical fault that's left undiagnosed is a fire and shock risk. Getting a qualified electrician to diagnose and fix it properly — rather than reset and ignore — is always the right call.

Frequently asked questions

RCDs trip when they detect a difference between the current flowing out and returning — which is exactly what happens when current is escaping to earth through a fault or a person. Common causes include faulty appliances, degraded cable insulation, or water ingress into a fitting. We'll isolate which circuit is causing it and trace the fault.
Yes. Dead sockets are usually caused by a tripped MCB, a fault on that ring or radial circuit, or (on older installations) a broken connection. We'll test and diagnose the circuit and fix the root cause.

Yes — we can carry out all remedial work identified during an inspection. We provide a fixed quote for remedial works at the same time as the EICR report.
Intermittent flickering can indicate a loose connection on the circuit or at the fitting. Loose connections are a fire risk. It's worth getting it checked rather than monitoring it.

Typical cost range

£80 – £300

We charge a call-out and diagnostic fee, then provide a fixed price to carry out any remedial work before starting. Most straightforward faults are diagnosed and fixed in a single visit. Complex or intermittent faults may require more time — we'll be transparent about this.
