What it involves
Your fuse board (the correct term is consumer unit) is the central hub that distributes power around your home and protects every circuit with modern breakers. Older units use rewirable fuses or early MCBs that don't offer the protection standards required today. A modern consumer unit with RCBOs (residual current breaker with overcurrent protection) gives each circuit its own protection — so a fault on one circuit doesn't trip the whole house.
Why it matters
An outdated consumer unit is the single most common reason a home fails an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). Mortgage lenders and insurers increasingly require up-to-date consumer units. If you're renovating, adding an EV charger, or installing solar, a new unit is almost always part of the job. It's also a legal requirement that any replacement is carried out by a Part P registered electrician — and signed off with a certificate.
